New Toyota RAV4 EV to go on sale in 2012

New Toyota RAV4 EV to go on sale in 2012

The new generation of the Toyota RAV4 electric vehicle is almost here and after the Japanese automaker used to sell the EV RAV4 more than 14 years ago with no success, the new version of the eco-friendly crossover is expected to hit the showrooms next year.According to autocar.co.uk, the RAV4 EV will come with the Tesla electric powertrain. “Tesla is a catalyst for the industry and is pushing forward electric vehicle development. We will carry on as we are, pushing forward and showing people that not only are electric vehicles viable, they are also the best. Major manufacturers were taking too long to develop electric cars so it needed a firm like Tesla to act as a catalyst”, said the Tesla CEO Elon

2012 Infiniti FX Facelift revealed - but not for the UK

2012 Infiniti FX Facelift revealed - but not for the UK

Infiniti is launching a facelift for 2012 of the Infiniti FX with a new nose and wheels and some minor interior tweaks – in the US, at least.

You’d be forgiven for not even knowing what an Infiniti FX looks like; they’re far from ubiquitous in the UK. That said, we did spot an FX in the wild at the start of the year, although nothing since.

Yet if you want an Infiniti FX there is a decent choice; everything from a 3.0 litre diesel to a 5.0 litre V8 by way of a 3.7 litre V6. There’s no proper halo performance model the equivalent of a Cayenne Turbo, ML63 or X5M, but they look half decent, get plenty of toys and are apparently not the worst sporty SUV to drive.

And unlike that other posh Japanese marque, Lexus, Infiniti does seem to have a predilection for a sporty SUV rather than a green one. It’s just a shame there seems to be no real effort to get the Infiniti under buyers’ noses.

There was a wide open door for Infiniti to claim space as the sporty luxury Japanese marque, but we wonder if that window of opportunity is fast disappearing. Lexus seem, finally, prepared to offer buyers something more interesting to drive, if the information on the 2012 GS is anything to go by, which could signal the end of the open door for Infiniti.

Unlike Lexus with the GS, Infiniti are not offering anything remotely resembling a new car in the 2012 FX, instead they’re performing a modest rhinoplasty, a new set of alloys and some very minimal interior tweaks.

US June Retail Sales +0.1%, Auto Sales Rebound; Gas Sls Down

By Yali N'Diaye
WASHINGTON (MNI) - The U.S. June retail sales report came in slightly better than analysts had expected, as auto sales rebounded while industry indications had pointed to a further decline.
This was partly offset by a decline in sales at gasoline stations in line with lower gasoline prices over the month.
June retail sales rose 0.1%, following a 0.1% decline in May that was revised up from -0.2%. Over the second quarter, sales rose 1.1%.
Excluding motor vehicles and parts, sales were unchanged in June, while they were up 0.2% without including auto or gasoline sales, rising at the same pace as in May.
Retail sales were up 8.1% year-over-year, and were up 7.9% excluding autos.
Motor vehicle and parts sales rebounded 0.8% in June, contrary to indications from the auto industry which reported auto sales fell to an annual selling rate of 8.6 million on the month. Disruptions in the supply chain in relation to the Japanese earthquake earlier this year had also been expected to continue to weigh on auto sales.
More in line with expectations, sales at gasoline stations fell 1.3% in June, when the average retail price of gasoline fell.

Dr. Beach's 2011 Great Great Lakes Beaches:  Detailed List

Dr. Beach's 2011 Great Great Lakes Beaches: Detailed List

1. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Lake Michigan, Michigan.
Here you will find some of the most spectacular coastal dunes in the world—I especially liked trekking up the huge dune on the north end of this expansive park. There are a variety of beaches with fine to grainy sand and clean, clear water. Children often play and look for Petoskey stones (beautiful pebbles of fossilized coral) in the small, shallow creeks that drain into Lake Michigan, where the water is warmer than the lake. Traverse City is a great nearby town with many attractions.

2. Presque Isle State Park, Lake Erie, Pennsylvania.
This 7-mile long, naturally-occurring sand spit provides a range of water-based activities, including 11 principal swimming areas (which draw some crowds) to unique ecological areas with very few people. There is so much to do and see in this curving peninsula-like feature that juts into Lake Erie, certainly making the trip to this 3,200 acre park worthwhile.

3. Sand Point Beach, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Lake Superior, Michigan.
This small beach is protected from waves by offshore islands and the water is shallow—these factors make the water warm enough to go swimming, which I did in August. This is a huge park with spectacular and picturesque cliffs, which is best seen by boat. The water is crystal clear and surprisingly emerald green in shallow water areas.

4. Bayfield Main Beach, Lake Huron, Ontario, Canada.
The small village of Bayfield on Lake Huron boasts of being a Blue Flag beach, signifying its environmental quality and services. There are amenities close to the beach, and crowds are never a concern at this remote beach. The sandy beach grades into cobbles offshore. Bayfield is a delightful town to explore, and the town pier is the favorite place to watch sunsets.

5. Oak Street Beach, Lake Michigan, Chicago, Illinois.
Oak Street Beach is located on Chicago’s famed Lakeshore Drive. This 26-mile lakefront is used by cyclists, runners and parents with strollers; the fine-sand beach has lifeguards, making it a safe beach. This strand of sand provides stunning views of the historic architecture of Chicago and Lake Michigan. I recommend public transportation to the beach as there is limited street parking

US Big 3 grab more auto sales - NashuaTelegraph.com
DETROIT – The Detroit Three sold 50.2 percent of the light vehicles purchased by U.S. consumers last month, capturing a majority of the market for the first time since August 2009, as the effects of Japan’s March earthquake continued to rock the auto industry.
Chrysler led major U.S. automakers with a 30.2 percent year-over-year sales gain in June. Sales grew 10.6 percent at GM and 13.3 percent at Ford.
But shortages of cars on Toyota’s and Honda’s lots kept their consumers out of showrooms, dragging each of their sales down 21 percent and holding the overall U.S. annual sales rate to 11.5 million – its lowest level since August 2010 and well below analysts’ expectations.
“The Japanese automakers really got hit hard, much harder than any one of us anticipated,” said Jesse Toprak, an analyst with TrueCar.com.
Despite growing unemployment, automakers said the low Japanese inventories, not the economy, bore most of the blame for the slow U.S. sales rate. As Toyota and Honda ramp up production, dealers should restock their lots this fall. That, automakers said, should improve sales in the second half of the year.
While some small-car buyers were waiting last month, large-vehicle shoppers were buying.
Shortages of Japanese small cars and dropping fuel prices combined to give truck, SUV and crossover sales 49 percent of June U.S. light-vehicle sales, compared with a 50.1 percent share for passenger cars. That’s a recovery from a dip to 47.4 percent in April, when cars made up 52.6 percent of U.S. sales, according to Autodata.
“There’s a big asterisk on the car market being that, industry-wide, particularly for us, there was some significant shortages,” said Bob Carter, U.S. chief of the Toyota division.

Ford Motor Co. (F), the second-largest U.S. automaker, said U.S. industrywide auto sales will rise in the second half on greater availability of models and increased demand after reaching a low point in May and June.
June’s seasonally adjusted annual rate will match or be “slightly better,” than May’s 11.8 million rate, George Pipas, Ford’s sales analyst, told reporters today in Dearborn, Michigan, where the company is based. Ford’s June sales rose from a year earlier, he said, without providing specific figures.
Industrywide sales have been hurt by “the lack of availability of some popular products in May, June and probably July” because of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Pipas said. “When they come back on line, we’ll do as well as we did in the first four months of the year, plus we’ll have pent-up demand from people who have been deferring purchases.”
